Nothing replaces face-to-face connection for our Shecosister Gina Li

Name: Gina Li
Business: Owner, GRL Translation + Communication

What is at the heart of your business?
I help businesses communicate more clearly and concisely. Whether that’s turning French copy into compelling English, writing newsletters, articles and blog posts or editing marketing materials, my goal is to create captivating content that connects with the target audience.

Why did you join a women’s coworking and wellness community?
I was really drawn to the idea of connecting with other creative, passionate and big-hearted women for inspiration, encouragement and support. We need sisterhood now, more than ever. And also, the wellness aspect, which has always been an important part of my life.

Why did you join a women’s coworking and wellness community?
I’m eager to connect with other creative souls, so we can share our unique experiences, perspectives and insights and help one another succeed.

What does thriving look like for you?
For me, thriving is about feeling connected (to myself, my family, friends and community), having abundant time to play and create, achieving success on my terms and feeling like I’m making a difference in the world.

Shecosystem’s core values are: openness, community, collaboration, accessibility, sustainability, feminism, and wellness. Which of these resonates most with you and why?
Community and wellness are right at the top of the list for me. I’m very much a solopreneur, but I really thrive on meaningful connection with others, and wellness has always been a core value of mine.

Tell us one way you integrate self-care into your working life:
As much as possible, I try to get outside for some fresh air every day. When I’m in the thick of a project or working against a deadline, I can easily tell myself that I don’t have the time. But when I go out for just a little bit, it clears my head, grounds me and helps me come back to my work re-energized.

What’s your top piece of advice for other women entrepreneurs?
Get out and network. In the digital age, we may be tempted to think that we can build our businesses just by tapping into social media and working on our laptops from the comfort of our home or our favourite coffee shop. But nothing replaces face-to-face connection. Take advantage of as many opportunities as you can to connect in person. It builds trust and rapport in a way that no amount of online interaction can ever do.

Anything else we should know about you?
Although I can be quite chatty and sociable, at heart, I’m an introvert. I love connecting with others, but at the end of the day, I recharge my batteries through solitary pursuits – reading, journaling, creative writing, yoga, meditation, time in nature and hot baths. Of course, with a very extraverted 8-year-old, it can sometimes be challenging to carve out time for self-care! But I find that the more I do, the calmer and more patient I am as a parent.

Shecosister Stefanie Fiore reminds us of the importance of self-care (and cat videos)

Name: Stefanie Fiore
Business: Creative Director, Crrumb

What is at the heart of your business?
Storytelling. Crrumb is a creative studio with a focus on web design and illustration. We love creating custom, immersive experiences for our clients.

Why did you join a women’s coworking and wellness community?
Shecosystem feels like a 2nd home to me– it must be something about the good vibes and the essential oils!

What does thriving look like for you?
Feeling grounded and expansive at the same time.

Tell us one way you integrate self-care into your working life:
I try to check in with myself every hour or so and see what I need. A drink of water? To go for walk? Watch a cat video from Youtube? (Cat videos are the fastest way to uplift your spirits, in my opinion!) It’s important to give yourself the permission to take care of yourself. Even these tiny decisions can have a big impact on your day.

What’s your top piece of advice for other women entrepreneurs?
It’s okay to say no.

Anything else we should know about you?
I love singing karaoke! My current go-to songs are What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes, Believe by Cher and My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. We’re in a prime karaoke neighbourhood, so I’m looking forward to planning some outings.

Practicing self-compassion and love as a new skill everyday with Shecosister Kate O’Connor

Name: Kate O’Connor
Business: Emperor, Sweetheart Empire

What is at the heart of your business?
I photograph weddings, families, couples, and individuals. My mission is simply to help my subjects feel safe — to show, and be seen as, who they truly are.

Why did you join a women’s coworking and wellness community?
What happens in my biz is an expression of my internal life – heart, head, body, and soul. Combining work and wellness just makes sense!

What do you wish to give and/or receive from this community?
Compassion, love, sisterhood, accountability, advice, and work breaks where we dance it off.

What does thriving look like for you?
Practicing self-compassion and love as a new skill everyday. Being grounded enough that it feels safe to grow. Feeling that my cup runneth over, giving me the strength to share my gifts with the people around me. “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” ~ Marianne Williamson

Shecosystem’s core values are: openness, community, collaboration, accessibility, sustainability, feminism, and wellness. Which of these resonates most with you and why?
All of them resonate, but the one most unique to Shecosystem is feminism. To be surrounded by folks who appreciate the challenges of patriarchy, and who work intentionally to break it down and overcome it – that is exciting to me.

Tell us one way you integrate self-care into your working life:
I meditate for 15 minutes every day. I use the Headspace app and highly recommend it.

What’s your top piece of advice for other women entrepreneurs?
Don’t try to please everyone, or even “most people”. Do what you do best, and your clients will self-filter to be people who truly value you… I’m still learning how to take this advice myself.

Anything else we should know about you?
I manifested my boyfriend with a vision board. Like, to a T… That shit is cray.

Shecosister Shari Lash thrives when mindfully engaging with body and soul

Name: Shari Lash
Business: Owner, WholeSTEP

What is at the heart of your business?
Learning. Insight. Connection. One leads into the other. What sets my heart alight is when I see my clients discover something new that gives them a greater understanding of themselves or the world they live in. It is a tremendous honour for me to witness and mirror someone’s strengths whether it’s in a group, through writing, or working one-on-one.

Why did you join a women’s coworking and wellness community?
To be part of a growing community who are building a web of support that appeals to the social, emotional, and practical aspects of starting and running a business. I look forward to meeting a variety of entrepreneurs, who are on all points on the spectrum. I’m hoping to learn from them, share ideas, sit in circle, and build meaningful connections. I’m also looking for a space to go and work that is welcoming and motivating so I can get shit done!

What do you wish to give and/or receive from this community?
Just being in the presence of strong and insightful women stokes my fire of creativity. I hope to support and collaborate with members while building and expanding my web of connections. I’m excited to contribute to internal projects and programs as well. Whether it’s hosting a collective wisdom circle at the beginning or end of a workday, or leading reflective exercises to unearth each woman’s unique offer through writing, I can’t wait to share what I have to offer with the Shecosystem community.

What does thriving look like for you?
Thriving is seeing those little green shoots emerge and flourish after waiting for something to grow. When I’m thriving, I’m living my intention, I’m working and earning a living at something creative and challenging while enjoying relationships that inspire and motivate me. Thriving comes from doing nothing at all or engaging mindfully with body and soul. Finally, thriving comes from knowing that I am enough, even when I don’t feel like it.

Shecosystem’s core values are: openness, community, collaboration, accessibility, sustainability, feminism, and wellness. Which of these resonates most with you and why?
How to choose? To me, feminism is the umbrella that holds space for everything that Shecosystem stands for. Gloria Vanderbilt, says, “I’ve always believed that one woman’s success can only help another woman’s success.” My experience has taught that success cannot be achieved or celebrated in isolation. What makes Shecosystem unique are the values informed by feminism — all those mentioned in this question. Feminist practices don’t necessarily apply to women only. I think we need to make the tent wide enough for everyone who wants to be included.

Tell us one way you integrate self-care into your working life:
Taking lots of breaks, sleeping in when I need to, and being kind.

What’s your top piece of advice for other women entrepreneurs?
“The best way to destroy something special about yourself is to compare it to something else.” There will always be someone more skilled, more experienced, and more successful. There is only one recipe that you alone can create. You are enough.

Anything else we should know about you?
I teach what I most need to learn.

Shecosister Stephanie Dodge has a way with words

Name: Stephanie Dodge

Title: Content Strategist

What is at the heart of your business?
Putting complex concepts into accessible language, and simplifying digital experiences.

Why did you join a women’s coworking and wellness community?
I joined to stay motivated and centered as I look for a good fit for my next career move. Being around other people who are working hard is very motivating, and the reflection exercises helps me keep my natural anxiety in check.

What do you wish to give and/or receive from this community?
I hope to support others in being kinder to ourselves and respecting our own mental and physical health needs. Once those are taken care of, everything else comes more easily!

What does thriving look like for you?
Being excited to start my day and connect with driven women. Moving my body and feeling gratitude for what I have.

Shecosystem’s core values are: openness, community, collaboration, accessibility, sustainability, feminism, and wellness. Which of these resonates most with you and why?
All of them resonate, but the biggest would be “community”, “feminism” and “wellness”. It’s important to have a place where women can support each other and find the strength to fight impostor syndrome and self-doubt.

Tell us one way you integrate self-care into your working life:
I go for walks to clear my head. We all put way too much pressure on ourselves!

What’s your top piece of advice for other women entrepreneurs?
Be decisive in your language! Men aren’t conditioned to waffle and qualify their statements; why should we?

Anything else we should know about you?
I love rock climbing at Basecamp and horseback riding at Exhibition Place! Also I have a blind Boston Terrier who plays a mean game of fetch.

Meet our Shecosister Mugdha Pradhan

Name: Mugdha Pradhan

Business: Yoga Mukti Healing and Gut Instincts Fermented Beverages

Title: Author, Healer and Entrepreneur

What is at the heart of your business?

Wellness for the community

Why did you join a women’s coworking and wellness community?

This space appealed to me because it honours the feminine way of working and provides an infinite potential to co-create beauty.

What do you wish to give and/or receive from this community?

This is a community where I could be of value as a healer and because healing is never a one way street, I get much more in return

What does thriving look like for you?

When a being is thriving she is blessed with an abundance of health and enthusiasm, that’s the only currency of a fulfilling life

Shecosystem’s core values are: openness, community, collaboration, accessibility, sustainability, feminism, and wellness. Which of these resonates most with you and why?

Every single one resonates with me, because this embodies a new way of working, of creating an interlinked and synergistic ecosystem. I think the current splintered, antagonistic and hierarchical way of working is completely unsustainable.

Tell us one way you integrate self-care into your working life:

Actually two ways:

  1. Nath Yoga practices are part of my daily routine and they are focused on healing body and mind
  2. Being with other people who celebrate my existence

On days that I successfully do this, my self-care regime is complete

What’s your top piece of advice for other women entrepreneurs?

Celebrate failure– it’s the fastest way to learn. Fail fast and recover fast. And one day you’ll run out of ways to fail and voila, that day you will be successful.

Anything else we should know about you?

I am an Author, Healer and Entrepreneur. I worked with different start-ups in India for about 10 years before I moved to Canada. I wrote my first book ‘Winning at Parenting with Nath Yoga’ and started my Probiotic beverages company in Toronto. I am Yoga Mukti Therapist and absolutely love spreading the knowledge of relaxation. I also actively volunteer with Startup Toronto.
